Deleting Your Own Reddit Comment
If it’s your own comment, you control it directly. Open the comment, click the three-dot menu, and select delete. On old.reddit.com the same option sits under the comment as plain text rather than an icon. Either way, the action is instant and doesn’t require anyone’s approval.
One thing to know: deleting a comment doesn’t remove it from any screenshots, archive sites, or third-party tools that already captured it. If the comment was up long enough to get indexed or archived, deletion on Reddit’s end is only step one.
Getting Someone Else’s Comment Removed
This is where most of the real work happens, and it follows the same three-step path regardless of the subreddit.
Step 1: Confirm It Actually Breaks a Rule
A comment being rude, wrong, or embarrassing isn’t grounds for removal on its own. Reddit and its subreddits act on specific violations: harassment, doxxing, threats, false statements presented as fact, spam, or content that breaks a subreddit’s individual rules. Read the subreddit’s rules page and Reddit’s Content Policy before writing your request, and know which specific line the comment crosses.
Step 2: Send the Request to the Right Place
Subreddit-specific violations go to the moderator team through “Message the Mods.” Sitewide Content Policy violations go through Reddit’s official report tool instead. Use the right template for each — writing from scratch each time is where most requests lose their edge.
Step 3: Escalate If You Hear Nothing Back
Active subreddits usually respond within a few days. If a week passes with no movement, don’t resend the identical message — escalate instead. For a moderator no-response, that means going to Reddit’s admin report tool. For an admin no-response on a clear-cut policy violation, that’s the point to consider bringing in help that has direct relationships and escalation paths beyond the standard queue.
What Actually Happens When a Comment Is Removed
Reddit shows two different labels, and they mean different things:
- [deleted] — the user removed their own comment
- [removed] — a moderator or admin took it down
In both cases, the comment’s text is gone from the live page, but the thread structure and reply chain usually stay in place — replies to the comment remain visible even though the original text doesn’t. If the comment was indexed by Google before removal, the cached version and any quoted excerpts in search snippets can persist separately from Reddit’s own systems for a period of time.
When Comment Removal Alone Doesn’t Solve the Problem
A single comment removal is usually straightforward. It gets more complicated when the same claim has been copy-pasted across multiple threads or subreddits, when the comment is part of a longer thread that continues to rank in search regardless of that one comment’s status, or when the person posting it creates a new account after being blocked. In those cases, removing one comment doesn’t fix the underlying visibility problem — you’re dealing with a pattern, not a single post.
Why Comment Removal Requests Get Denied
- The comment is negative or critical but doesn’t violate a specific rule
- No rule or policy citation was included in the request
- The claim in the comment can’t be disproven — opinion is generally protected even when it stings
- The request went to the wrong channel — moderators can’t act on sitewide policy issues, and admins won’t touch subreddit-specific rule questions
